THREE-DAY MEDITATION RETREAT |
by Audrey
Three-day meditation retreat can be daunting, even for one who has had a previous experience. At the end of the retreat, most retreatants shared that it was most challenging but beneficial in many respects. |
The proceedings of the retreat followed the designs of the Ven. Master Sheng Yen, the founder of Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Association. As proven to many from around the world, his methodology and teachings were practical and inspiring. |
As expected, the long sitting meditation brought on discomforts of leg pain, backache and drowsiness. Under Ven. Gou Chii guidance, we persisted with the practice and gained insight into our own failings and developed greater compassion for others. The value of regular, long-term sitting meditation cannot be under-estimated; as attested by many practitioners. Many scientific researchers have also found that the benefits are diverse and far-reaching. |
We all felt especially blessed that we received the excellent instructions and guidance given in the retreat. |
We were taught the various forms of walking meditations. The fast walking meditations were challenging but invigorating. |
The water-bowl walking meditation was new to most of us, but we all found it most challenging and instructive. There were of course, no material prizes, at the end of the walking meditation, but we had to concentrate and devote ourselves to saving every drop of water in the bowl for the Buddha Avalokiteśvara . The lesson in concentration, tranquility and devotion in this form of meditation IS priceless. |
At the end of the retreat, all participants shared their experiences of benefits and indicated their resolves to practice more regularly, when they return to their normal routines. |
